Your data is not a lease.

Linear is beautifully closed. Jira Cloud keeps moving. Plane is one open tracker. Your clients, hours and documents should outlive any vendor’s pricing page.

I do not trust a delivery stack I cannot get my work out of. Atlassian ended the version you could keep. Linear will never hand you the keys. ClickUp is one product, not a place your business can move out of. If the tool that holds your clients, hours and documents can vanish behind a pricing PDF, it is not infrastructure. It is a lease.

People say they will never get locked in, and then they pick whichever tool is nicest this week. I get it. I have done it. The week you need your work out — or the vendor announces another cloud-only chapter — “nice” is not a strategy.

Plane and OpenProject are the honest alternatives when a tracker is the whole job. Plane wants to be Linear. OpenProject wants to be Jira. Neither invoices. Neither sits next to a wiki that knows the client. Neither turns one membership into four products.

What you actually own

  • One sign-in. Open the board, the timer, the wiki or the teammate without four accounts or four bills.
  • One client directory. The same client record sits behind the board, the invoice and the document.
  • One hour. Time logged on the board is the same time you invoice. Nothing to reconcile.
  • Your pages. Documents belong to your workspace, not to a page builder you rent.
  • Your connections. You connect an outside app once and decide, in plain terms, what may move.
  • Your research. What your team learns stays as a document you can find again.
  • An exit. Your records are yours to take with you.

Closed suites win demos. A suite you can leave wins the 3am when the vendor’s status page is yellow and your timesheets are not.

If you cannot take it with you, you do not own it.

When I would not pick us

If you need a huge identity catalogue and hundreds of prebuilt connectors, the big platforms still have the binders. If you want zero setup, a single closed tool is less furniture. Ownership takes a small amount of care. We think that care is cheaper than the lease.

Buy ShellStack if your clients, hours and documents should outlive the vendor. Lock-in is a lease. Ownership is the point.
